How do I choose a teacher for my child?

Hoff-Barthelson's Dean meets individually with each new student and parent(s) prior to enrollment, and selects a teacher who will be appropriate for the student.


How many private lessons are there each year?

The Music School has two 16 week semesters.


What is the registration process for returning students?

Re-registration forms are mailed to all currently enrolled students on the same day in the beginning of May. Completed forms are numbered and processed in the order in which they are received at the office. Scheduling preferences are accommodated in the order in which forms are received at the office.


When will I find out the time and date of my child's lesson?

Re-registered students will be contacted by the Music School in July and August. New students will be told as quickly as possible after their registrations.


Do we have to pay separately for musicianship classes or participation in ensembles?

Students who are enrolled in private lessons do not pay additional fees for classes or ensembles. There is a modest charge for students from outside the School who wish to enroll in classes or ensembles.


Does the Music School offer Financial Aid?

Yes. Parents may request a financial aid form from the Registrar.


What is the Music Resource Center?

The Music Resource Center houses an outstanding collection of CD's, pedagogy materials, audio and video materials, books on music for children and adults, literature, and summer camp brochures


What is Dalcroze Eurhythmics for young children?

Conceived by the noted Swiss educator, Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, encourages learning through active participation in a relaxed setting, utilizing singing, movement and improvisation. Children develop inner hearing, rhythmic sensitivity and familiarity with elementary note-reading. Hoff-Barthelson has developed one of the largest faculties of Dalcroze trained and certified teachers in the United States.

DIRECTIONS

From New York City:

By train:
Take Harlem Line from Grand Central Station to Scarsdale. (35 minutes) At top of exit stairs, turn right and walk on East Parkway to traffic light. Turn left onto Popham Road and walk up the hill. Take third right onto School and Lane. The Music School is directly on your right.

By car:
West Side Highway Northbound, which becomes the Henry Hudson Parkway. Exit onto the Cross County Parkway, remaining in right hand lane. Take Exit 6 to the Bronx River Parkway Northbound. Stay to the right and continue on the Bronx River Parkway. At third light take the Harney Road exit and turn right. Make an immediate left onto Garth Road. Turn right at the next light on to Popham Road. Make the fourth right on to School Lane. The Music School is directly on your right.

From Northern Westchester by car:
Take the Bronx River Parkway southbound. Pass the Westchester Country Center in White Plains, and continue for 4 miles to Exit 12, Crane Road in Scarsdale, which exits to the left. Proceed straight on East Parkway (parallel with the train station) to the first traffic light. Turn left on to Popham Road and proceed three blocks up the hill. Make the third right on to School Lane. The Music School is directly on your right.

From Connecticut by car:
Take the Merritt Parkway Southbound and continue on the Hutchinson River Parkway southbound. Exit at Weaver Street. Make a right turn on to Weaver Street and stay on this winding residential road, going straight through intersections at Palmer Avenue and Weaver Street, where the name changes to Heathcote Road as it crosses a small highway bridge, and continue to the Post Road traffic light. Turn left on to the Post Road (Route 22) and then make an immediate right at the next traffic light onto Popham Road. Go about 4 blocks and turn left on to School Lane. The Music School is directly on your right.
